How synthetic nootropics can improve your concentration

Nootropics are substances that have a proven enhancing effect on your cognitive ability. More and more people are using nootropics to improve their performance at work, study, or courses. Previously we talked about natural nootropics. In addition to these types of substances, there is also a second category: Synthetic Nootropics. What are synthetic nootropics, how do they work and what are the benefits?

What are synthetic nootropics?

Synthetic nootropics are substances that have a strengthening effect on your cognitive ability. These are substances that are not naturally found in nature or in your body. They are often produced in laboratories.

There are a lot of synthetic nootropics, simply too many to cover. That is why we provide an overview of the four most common synthetic nootropics: Modafinil, Methylphenidate (the active substance in Ritalin), Vinpocetine and Racetams.



Modafinil is prescribed to people with narcolepsy. In 1979 the compound was developed by the French company Laboratoire Louis Lafon. Modafinil improves your sharpness and alertness, mood, responsiveness, motivation, vigilance and reduces your fatigue [source 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8].

How does it work? Modafinil works via the Dopamine Reuptake Transporter (also known as DAT), which regulates the absorption of dopamine [source 9]. Modafinil ensures that dopamine is not reabsorbed by the nerves. This is important because it means a higher level of dopamine in the synapse between the nerves [source 1]. More dopamine in the synapse provides stimulating activity.

Modafinil may also have negative effects such as diarrhea, nervousness and anxiety. The substance is not labeled as Generally Regarded as Safe (GRAS) by the US Food and Drug Administration. This means that the organisation does not approve Modafinil as a dietary supplement [source 1].

Methylphenidate is a substance that has existed since the sixties. It is marketed under various names, including: Concerta, Equasym and Ritalin. The substance has a positive effect on your attention, mood, information processing, hyperactive behavior and attention span [source 10].
How? Methylphenidate acts on 2 conductors in your brain that absorb dopamine. As with Modafinil, a higher amount of Dopamine provides a stimulating effect [source 1].
The Medicines Evaluation Board approves the use of methylphenidate. Possible negative effects are cardiovascular diseases, depression, anxiety and insomnia [source 11]. Up to now, not enough research on methylphenidate has been conducted to provide a clear picture of the benefits and risks.

Vinpocetine is a herb that originates from central Europe and was discovered in 1975 by the Hungarian Csbasa Szántay. It makes it easier for you to retrieve information from your memory [source 13].

How? Vinpocetine improves the brain’s metabolism by improving the blood circulation of the brain. This is possible because the production of Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is increased [source 15]. ATP plays an important role in cell metabolism, since it is a carrier of chemical energy. This energy is needed in most processes that occur in the cells. This energy is necessary, for example, to enable the transfer of information within the brain.

Vinpocetine is not labeled as GRAS by the FDA [source 14]

Racetams omvatten ongeveer 20 synthetische nootropics, waarvan de bekendste Aniracetam, Oxiracetam en Pramiracetam zijn. De eerste Racetam was de Piracetam, ontwikkeld door Cornelie Giurgea in 1964. Sindsdien zijn er vele aanpassingen hierop gekomen. Het was verbazingwekkend hoe succesvol de stof was in het verhogen van het cognitief vermogen [bron 16].

Verschillende racetams hebben verschillende effecten, maar over het algemeen verhogen ze je concentratievermogen [bron 17,18,19].


Racetams include about 20 synthetic nootropics, of which the best known are Aniracetam, Oxiracetam and Pramiracetam. The first Racetam was the Piracetam, developed by Cornelie Giurgea in 1964. Since then, many adjustments have been made. It was amazing how successful the substance was in increasing cognitive ability [source 16].
Different racetams have different effects, but in general they increase your concentration capacity [source 17,18,19].

How does it work? Racetams affect receptors that are important for information processing within the brain. This is done according to the same principle as described earlier. Choline is added to many Racetams to enhance the effect. The increase in choline leads to the formation of more Acetylcholine. This in turn leads to a better cognitive capacity. The problem with measuring the safety of Racetams is that most of the research has been done on people with cognitive problems, such as dementia. Little research has been done into the influence of racetams on healthy adults. Racetams are not labeled as GRAS by the FDA [source 20].


What are the benefits of synthetic nootropics?

Modafinil, Ritalin, Vinpocetine and Racetams are substances that increase your concentration and this helps you to concentrate better on the things you want to get done. The risks of synthetic nootropics are not always clear in all cases. That is why synthetic nootropics will never be included in FLVX products. This is because FLVX wants to offer safe products with a cognitive strengthening effect. If the safety of a nootropic is under discussion, it will never be used in FLVX products.
